Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes, our struggles can be resolved by taking better care of ourselves or seeking support from  family or friends.  There may be times, however  when seeking professional support from a psychologist may be beneficial.

Psychological treatment is encouraged when your mental health symptoms or problems persist and and are negatively impacting your personal, occupational, social or academic functioning.

We will explore your goals for treatment and what you hope to get out of our work together. We then establish what kinds of needs or issues you’d like to address in our sessions, as well as what you’ve done to manage your mental health in the past. We talk through what  has and has not worked  for you, and what you want to achieve and discuss how best to support you.

Research indicates that the duration of counselling is variable. Depending on your specific needs and goals,  our work together can be short-term, for specific issues, or sometimes longer-term or ongoing, to deal with more longstanding complex issues. It is a collaborative process, and your progress and goals will be discussed during the course of treatment.

A clinical psychologist is a university-trained professional who is registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency, a national regulatory body. Clinical psychologists  have  8 years of training, 4 years of basic university training, a minimum of 2 years post graduate training, and then a further 2 years of supervised practice following graduate work, via an internship program. They also specialise in specific areas and offer evidence based treatments.
